The Hermitage is seeking to make its collections more accessible and to do justice to its magnificent 19th and 20th century holdings, which include works by German Romantics and some of the world's greatest Impressionists and Post-Impressionists. With the opening of the 21st century the Hermitage is moving into a new stage in its evolution where 20th century art must be displayed and explained to the public in the same way as that of earlier centuries. The new building also offers the opportunity to mount exhibitions of contemporary art from all over the world, including Russia itself.

The restoration of the eastern wing of the General Staff Building and its conversion into Russia's first dedicated museum of 19th and 20th and 21th century art will be the Hermitage's most important development project of the next decade. We hope to celebrate its completion for the 250th anniversary of the museum's foundation in 2014.

The project has financial backing from the Russian State budget and the World Bank. The complete renovation of the building, however, can only be achieved with the help of commercial sponsorship and private donations. The museum’s capital fundraising campaign was launched at our Gala Banquet in June 2006. Vladimir Putin, then President of Russia, expressed his support. A second successful fundraising banquet was held in June 2007. The summer banquet is now firmly established as key date in the Hermitage calendar.

The banquets of 2006 and 2007 raised a total of $1,833,196. This money will go towards the second stage of the General Staff renovation. The first phase, due for completion by the end of 2009, is generously financed by the World Bank. The Hermitage needs to find $50m from private sources for the second stage; the Russian government has agreed to match, dollar for dollar, all private contributions.

The museum has received significant funding from the state budget of Russia and the World Bank for this project. However, the complete renovation of the building can only be achieved with substantial sponsorship and charitable donations. The International Gala Banquet on 23 June 2006 launched the capital fundraising campaign. The initiative was supported by the President of Russia. Henceforth the Summer International Gala Banquet will be a key date in the Hermitage calendar.

June is the most popular time to visit Russia's old imperial capital. The famous ‘White Nights' around the summer solstice, mean that the sun hardly sets over the city. It is the perfect time to visit the country palaces built by the imperial family for summer life and to see the elaborate parks that surround them, with their pavilions and lakes. The historic city with its 300 palaces, its rivers and canals and its lofty cathedrals sparkles in the summer sunlight. Guests who want to stay in St Peterburg for a few days are invited to join the special sightseeing tour organized by Friends of the Hermitage (GB).
