"The painter plays the spider, and hath woven
A golden mesh..." Shakespeare's Sonnets and the portraits of Hilliard

The Winter Palace of Peter the Great
Beginning at 6:30 p.m.
March 30th, 2012

The State Hermitage Museum presents a new program, entitled "The Language of the Era. Image and Word." This program represents an attempt at producing visual and stylistic juxtapositions between poetry and fine art; these juxtapositions are meant to be associative, rather than direct. Much like literature, every type of fine art has its own specific language, which it uses to "speak" to us.
Art historians (employed by the Hermitage) will identify the distinguishing features of the "language" of works of art from a particular era. At the meetings, old compositions will be presented, both in the original language and translations into Russia, along with commentary by specialists on their linguistic and stylistic features.
The program is led by State Hermitage Museum art historian Irina Vladlenovna Bykova.

Tickets will be available at the Winter Palace on the day of the event
Ticket Price: 350 rubles
Inquiries by telephone at: 495-71-47; 495-71-48
