As an extension of the State Hermitage electronic commerce project, in 2002 a shop selling museum products for delivery to customers' homes was set up in the museum. The Hermitagemuseum e-shop, as it is called in English, is located on the second floor of the Winter Palace in one of the halls adjoining the display of 19th-century French art. The range of goods offered is for the most part similar to that available through the online shop. It includes copies of original items in the museum collections, exhibition catalogues, illustrated art books about the Hermitage and St Petersburg, art reproductions on fabric, artistic items made of glass, porcelain and pottery, fashion accessories and much more.

Computer terminals installed in the shop provide access to the online shop's web-site. Here, as at home, customers can view the catalogue, select goods and pay for them over the Internet. In general this services is aimed at providing museum visitors with the opportunity to purchase goods in the shop and take delivery of them back home. This is convenient, of course, if an item is of considerable weight or large size and would present a lot of problems if taken as hand-luggage. If for some reason a visitor did not buy an item at the time, he or she can do it after returning home, as the online shop is always open. In the museum shop, visitors can view and assess the quality of the goods as it is a sort of shop window for the Hermitage goods.
