THE STATE HERMITAGE
CREATIVE ALLIANCE OF MUSEUM EMPLOYEES OF ST PETERSBURG AND LENINGRAD OBLAST
COMMITTEE FOR CULTURE OF ST PETERSBURG GOVERNMENT
Present

EIGHTH INTERNATIONAL GRAND WALTZ FESTIVAL
10 July - 20 July, 2009

The State Hermitage and Inter-Regional public organization Creative Alliance of Museum Employees of St Petersburg and Leningrad Oblast and Committee for Culture of St Petersburg Government present 8th International Grand Waltz Festival that takes place daily from July 10th till July 20th, 2009, in the Hermitage Theatre, in the Armorial Hall of the Winter Palace (the State Hermitage), in the Great Palace of Peterhof, in the Catherine Palace of Tsarskoe Selo and, of course, in the Rose Pavilion of Pavlovsk.

Eleven concerts - one for each summer season Strauss spent in Petersburg - are given annually as a part of the Grand Waltz festival. This year the concerts will take place in the Hermitage Theatre, in the Armorial Hall of the Winter Palace (the State Hermitage), the Great Palace of Peterhof, in the Catherine Palace of Tsarskoe Selo and, of course, in the Rose Pavilion of Pavlovsk, where the great Austrian composer performed.

Each concert does not merely 'copy' programmes from the Strauss seasons but also develops the traditions of the chamber democratic music-playing that were established almost two centuries ago. The festival programme combines evenings of symphonic music and chamber music, vocal evenings.

The masters who have already left the significant trace in the history of the music culture will perform in the concerts of the Festival, among them: the soloists of the Mariinsky Theatre Elena Mirtova and Sergey Roldugin, the soloists of the Vienna State Opera Herwig Pecoraro and Marcela Cerno, the Austrian conductor Peter Guth and famous Russian conductors Vladimir Ziva, Alexander Kantorov, Aleksey Karabanov and Dmitry Khokhlov, famous pianists Peter Laul and Vladimir Mischuk, as well as the orchestras of the State Hermitage, the Klassika State Symphonic Orchestra, the Admiralty Orchestra of the Leningrad Naval Base and the State Academic Russian Folk Orchestra named after V. V. Andreev.

The State Hermitage with the participation of the Inter-Regional public organization Creative Alliance of Museum Employees of St Petersburg and Leningrad Oblast supporting the declared UNESCO principle of revival of the non-material heritage developed the concept of the annual Grand Waltz festival that became the winner of the Intermuseum-2003 festival in Moscow in the Best Museum Project nomination. The Grand Waltz project that under the aegis of the Hermitage unites the largest cultural institutions of St Petersburg and Vienna allows not just to strengthen the external cultural relations and to promote Petersburg culture in the regions of our country and abroad but to promote patriotic upbringing of the Russian citizens by means of accustoming them to the timeless spiritual national values.

The chairman of the Honorary Festival Committee is the director of the State Hermitage and the chairman of the Inter-Regional public organization Creative Alliance of Museum Employees of St Petersburg and Leningrad Oblast Academician Mikhail Piotrovsky, the author of the festival idea and the artistic director is Yulia Kantor.

Following the traditions of the patronage the support for the festival is provided by JSC Bank of Moscow that has established partnership relations with the State Hermitage. One of the priority areas of the activities of the Bank of Moscow in St Petersburg is to preserve the cultural heritage of the Northern capital. This is the fourth joint festival of the Bank of Moscow and the State Hermitage that revives the traditions of patronage and gives the opportunity to accustom our contemporaries to the richest spiritual heritage.
