Traditional open-air concerts in the courtyards of the Hermitage and Winter Palace

11 July, Courtyard of the New Hermitage
Vasily Gerello and the Orchestrino Armonia

For the first time music will be performed in one more of the inner courtyards of the Hermitage - the large courtyard of the New Hermitage, which rightly can take its place as a unique small sized 'chamber' for holding festival concerts. It combines the styles of two great architects, Felten and von Klenze, all of which gives the courtyard of the New Hermitage a special mood. However, the small garden within the courtyard brings it into harmony with the very idea of the Hermitage. In the near future the courtyard of the New Hermitage will be renovated. In anticipation of this new musical life as a 'chamber concert courtyard,' the organizers of the festival invite music enthusiasts to visit space that was hitherto closed to museum guests and to enjoy masterpieces of classical music performed by the unique music ensemble of the Orchestrino Armonia. It will be accompanied by a star of the world opera scene, soloist of the Mariinsky Theatre Vasily Gerello - winner of the BBC's International Competition of Opera Singers in Cardiff (1993), winner of the Rimsky-Korsakov International Competition of Young Opera Singers (1st Prize, St Petersburg, 1994), winner of the first theatre prize in St Petersburg, the Zolotoy Sofit (1999), winner of the Fortissimo musical prize established by the Rimsky-Korsakov St Petersburg State Conservatory (in the category of Performance Mastery).

Orchestrino Armonia consists of 10 musicians. This is a uniquely constituted musical ensemble which has both symphony orchestra instruments - flute, clarinet, violin, cello, percussion and double bass - as well as Russian folk instruments - the balalaika, domra picola, domra alta, and bayan. This unusual combination of instruments encourages the process of creating new orchestrations within the ensemble itself by Sergey Volnukhin and Alexander Chernobaev. The 'philosophy' of the musical ensemble has found a response among modern composers. Works especially written for the Orchestrino Armonia have appeared.

The concert program includes popular classical music (Tchaikowsky, Stravinsky, Shostakovich and Dunaevsky), romances and songs by Russian composers.

13 July, Grand State Courtyard of the Winter Palace
Andrei Kondakov and the Brazil All Stars

Brazilian jazz is an integrated amalgam of Brazilian rhythm, Brazilian melodies and European harmonies. The idea for the combination of Andrei Kondakov and the Brazil All Stars arose in 1999 in New York when pianist and composer Andrei Kondakov got to know and for the first time appeared in the popular Greenwich Village spot Zinc Bar with the remarkable Brazilian musicians Sergio Brandau (double bass), Edson "Cafe" da Silva (percussionist) and Paulo Braga (drummer). These three musicians had already made history in Brazilian music and jazz thanks to their concerts and recordings with the great Antonio Carlos Jobim, Javan, Dodato, Milton Nashimentu, Herby Mann and Tanya Maria.

In April 2000, this joint project went on tour of Russia and recorded the album Old and New Brazilian Stories. At the time the musicians successfully appeared in St Petersburg as well. In 2003 this project was presented within the framework of the First St Petersburg International Peter & Paul Jazz Festival. In 2006, the musicians were invited to appear in the international jazz festival in Coctebel. This time instead of Paulo Braga, there was the legendary drummer Selso Alberti. The musician has been living for the past several years in California and appears with star musicians.

The project's program includes original compositions by Andrei Kondakov, as well as well known melodies by Antonio Carlos Jobim.

The concert opens with a jazz project by students of the well known Berkeley College of Music - Mass Ave Project consisting of Yakov Kremensky (guitar), Evgeny Lebedev (keyboard instruments),Nikolai Moiseenko (saxophone), David Guinard (double bass) and Jeffrey Vilanueva (percussion).

The special guests of the concert are David Goloshchekin (Russia) and David Sanchez (tenor saxophone, USA).

Most likely David Sanchez is presently the youngest tenor saxophone performer. He received recognition form critics and is loved by the jazz public. David is continuing to expand the boundaries of jazz, filling and enriching it with the beauty of Latin and Afro-Caribbean music. David began his training in the prestigious La Escuela Libre de Música in San Juan. The rhythms of Puerto Rico, as well as the best traditions of Cuban and Brazilian music have influenced his work. He won a grant to study in Rutgers University in New Jersey and then moved over to New York, where he soon became an inalienable part of the musical life of the jazz Mecca. He is beginning to appear with the pianist Eddy Palmieri, trumpeter Claudio Roditi and saxophonist Paquito D'Rivera. In 1991, the great Dizzy Gillespie invited the young saxophonist to take part in his project Live the Future. In 1995, he made his debut album. The album Obsesión (producer Brendford Marsalis) brought Sanchez a Grammy nomination. In 2005, his album Coral, recorded together with the Prague Philharmonic Orchestra gave him his fourth Grammy nomination and he won the Latin Grammy! David Sanchez performs on tour all around the world both within the best jazz ensembles and with his own projects, giving the public genuine pleasure from his work, which elegantly combines the best traditions of jazz music with Latin rhythms.
