VI International Festival "Musical Hermitage"
14 - 22 February 2009
The festival "Musical Hermitage", following the development
principles of one of the largest museums of the world
will yet again unite various musical genres and trends in its programmes.
According to the established tradition, the last week of winter
is the time when the leading musicians from all over
the world will demonstrate their professional skills on the stage
of the Hermitage Theatre and in the hall of the Academic
Capella. The programme of the concerts within the frames
of the festival is a kind of tour to countries
and epochs, an insight into various fields of the world
musical heritage.
The programme will be opened by the famous Italian choir Il Convitto
Armonico. On the 14th of February at 19.00 in the Large Italian Skylight
Room the choir under the conduction of maestro Stefano Buschini will perform
the masterpieces of the Italian composers, such as Palestrina, Monteverdi
and Vivaldi, surrounded by the works of art by their compatriots.
The programme of the concert by the Norwegian chamber orchestra Bodo
Sinfonietta will feature famous pieces of classical music ranging from Vivaldi
to their genial compatriot Edward Grieg, as well as music by contemporary
Norwegian composers.
Original arrangements made especially for this orchestra will be performed
on the stage of the Hermitage Theatre on the 15th of February by one of the leading
soloists of today, the Swedish cello player Franz Helmersson;
the orchestra will be conducted by a talented conductor from Germany,
our compatriot Oleg Snetkov.
The prestigious Dutch festival Grachtenfestival for the first time in Russia
presents its new winner, a talented violin player Lisa Jacobs.
On the 18th of February in the Hermitage Theatre, together with the pianist
Ksenia Kuzmenko, Lisa will perform works by Robert Schumann and Johannes
Brahms. The interpretation of the German composers by the gifted young
violinist has earned the highest appraisal of the musical critics.
The concert of the contemporary jazz music will introduce an exotic atmosphere
of Latin American rhythms to the programme of the Festival. A permanent
participant of the Festival, a famous St. Petersburg pianist and composer
Andrey Kondakov once again invites David Sanchez, Grammy winning tenor
saxophonist, as well as a hot Brazilian band featuring Sergio Brandau
(bass), Edson da Silva (percussion) and Selso Alberti (drums). The concert
under the heading Brazil All Stars will take place on the 19th of February
in the hall of the Academic Capella named after Mikhail Glinka.
The music by Astor Piazzola, which always wakes considerable interest
among the public, is performed by one of the leading interpreters of the works
by the Argentinean composer, Lothar Hensel. On the 20th of February
in the Hermitage Theatre the German musician, accompanied by the State
Hermitage Orchestra under the conduction of Anatoly Rybalko, will present
the most popular works by Astor Piazzola, as well as an own concert for bandoneon
and string orchestra. Many appreciators of the works by this
composer are convinced that the interpretations of Lothar Hensel are the most
authentic, since Lothar himself comes from Niederheim, a state in Germany where bandoneon was invented.
On the 21st of February the ethnic jazz project "Proshche Prostogo"
by Sergey Starostin, the key figure in the world of Russian
ethnical music, and Mario Kaldararu, a drummer from Kishinev,
will appear on the stage of the Hermitage Theatre
for the first time. Sergey Starostin is a whole epoch
in the history of the Russian folk music restored
and arranged according to the modern musical styles and
avant-garde trends and transformed into "worldmusic".
Every his project is interesting and unexpected, especially
new projects.
It has become a tradition to finish the Festival with the debut performances
by young Italian singers, winners of the Spoleto Festival. This year on the 22nd of February
the popular arias and duettos from operas by Donizetti,
Bellini, Verdi, Rossini and Puccini will be performed by Desiree Migliaccio
(soprano), Piero Pretti (tenor) and Giulio Boschetti (baritone) accompanied
by the St. Petersburg Academic Symphonic Orchestra under the conduction
of Mats Liljefors from Sweden.
