Taman Antiquities. Collected Essays.
4th Issue
Authors from the Hermitage and the Taman Museum took part in the publication.
Most of the articles address archeological exploration of the Taman Peninsula
started in the late 18th century and continuing to the present day. Ancient
cities and villages which once occupied the eastern shore of Cimmerian
Bosporus were discovered on the Peninsula. Cimmerian Bosporus was the
ancient name of the Strait of Kerch between the Kerch and Taman Peninsulas
which connects the Black Sea to the Sea of Azov. This area at the crossroads
of maritime and overland routes has always attracted colonizers.
The book gives maps, plans and pictures of Taman and artifacts found by
various archeological expeditions.
The second part of the book is dedicated to the jubilee of the Lermontov
Heritage Association and contains essays addressing the family history
and literary works of the famous Russian poet Mikhail Yu. Lermontov who
visited Taman and described it in his books.
300 copes of the book are published by the State Hermitage Publishing
House.
