Being the result of the author's many years of research, the book traces the development of the basic branches of French applied arts in the 17th-18th centuries and principal factors and conditions which affected their style. Nina Yu. Biryukova presents a broad scope of various branches of France's applied arts and an analysis of the most important creations examined by the author in the major museums of Europe and America, first of all, the Hermitage.

Corresponding Member of the Russian Academy of Arts and Professor, Dr. Nina Yu. Biryukova is an acknowledged specialist in West European applied arts. Over 30 years she stood at the head of the West European and Applied Arts Sector of the State Hermitage Museum.
