Old Ekatherinburg
AquaGemm presents the second book of the Old Ekatherinburg Project. The
idea, conception and structure of this research and publication project
were devised by the Lithica Society for Gem History. The book marks two
jubilees, the 300th anniversary of St. Petersburg and the 280th anniversary
of Ekatherinburg whose history is closely associated with the City on
the Neva. The book is dedicated to the unique collection of old carved
gems from Ekatherinburg preserved at the State Hermitage Museum. Yu.O.
Kagan, Carving Class, V.B. Semenov, Unitary Stone, A.I.
Akimov, Two Odysseys of Ekatherinburg Cameo. The book is edited
by V.B. Semenov. Its idea is to introduce readers to the little known,
though highly original, Russian art of cameo, cultivated at the former
Ekatherinburg Imperial Lapidary Works. Search for and mining of schistose
rocks suitable for carving started in the Ural in 1781. As an independent
industry it came to existence in the late 1780s and reached its height
during the 1820s-1840s, dying out in the middle of the 19th century. During
over a half century, Ekatherinburg masters carved about 400-450 cameos.
