The Knights' Hall. The series Your
Hermitage
Yu. G. Efimov
The series Your Hermitage is addressed to school children and
has been prepared in keeping with the school curriculum and interests
of the young visitors to the Hermitage themselves
After a nearly 40-year interruption, the State Hermitage Publishing House
has issued a new handbook to the Knights’ Hall for school-age children.
This modest sized and bright-looking book in a convenient format is filled
with colored illustrations, as well as reproductions of old prints and
drawings. The text has been written in simple and inventive language.
The author tells us about the history of the development of arms in the
15th - 17th centuries and their specific features, about knights, wars,
tournaments, and hunting. In chronological order we are given a discussion
about the different forms of weapons - defensive, cold arms, firearms.
A significant amount of material is devoted to the masters who made these
arms - blacksmiths, specialists in plating, cutting, chasing, engraving
and artists - as well as to the techniques employed to manufacture and
decorate the weapons. The text is divided into several chapters, each
of which is illustrated with supplemental material - old engravings and
drawings. Unlike previous guidebooks, the present edition has a small
section dealing with the history of the formation of the Hermitage collection
of arms from the beginning of the 19th century and information about their
owners.
