Antique Glass
from the In brevi series of booklets
A booklet by N.Z. Kunina entitled
The Hermitage has developed a program called In brevi, which is directed
at readers of all ages who have the most diverse interests. In 2004 the
State Hermitage Publishing House issued 5 illustrated books and brochures
in this educational series.
The Latin term In brevi may be translated as "briefly"
and books in this series attempt to provide brief information about what
is most important: about the most significant monuments in temporary exhibitions
or permanent displays of the State Hermitage. These bright and attractive
looking brochures are as a rule written by curators of the museum collections
and can serve not only as a reliable reference work but also as a pleasant
souvenir of a visit to one of the world’s largest museums.
The booklet Antique Glass by Nina Zakharovna Kunina, a leading
specialist in the history of ancient glassmaking, provides a condensed
narrative on the history of glass production in the ancient world. The
Hermitage has thousands of glass objects made by ancient masters - beads
and amulets, seals and cameos, military decorations and miniature sculptures,
examples of glass mosaics, and, of course, diverse vessels. It is nearly
three and a half thousand years since the ancient masters learned to make
vessels, that is hollow wares for storage. The reader will learn about
the various forms and shapes of glassware which was produced by peoples
living around the Mediterranean Sea and in Central Europe over the course
of nearly two millennia, from the end of the 15th century B.C. to the
first centuries A.D. The booklet relates the history of the development
of production technology and describes the technical solutions for manufacturing
everyday glass items as well as art objects from glass. Among the items
described here are glass vessels made to imitate articles of colored stone
and decorated with painting on the glass, transparent blown glass vessels
and objects made using special moulds, glass vessels and decorations which
are reproductions of glyptic works.
