Staff of the Imperial Hermitage. 1852-1917
A Bio-bibliographical reference work
In 2004 the State Hermitage Publishing House issued a bio-bibliographical
reference work entitled Staff of the Imperial Hermitage. 1852-1917,
which was prepared by G. I. Kachalina, V.F. Marshinkina and E.M. Yakovleva,
researchers at the Archive of the State Museum.
This is the first publication in the history of the Hermitage to provide
complete and systematized biographical information about the employees
of the imperial museum, from directors down to couriers. The period covered
is the second half of the 19th and early 20th centuries.
The 125 biographical sketches have been prepared drawing on personnel
files stored in the Archive of the State Hermitage, with supplemental
material coming from other archives and historical sources. Most of the
articles contain a bibliographical section in which the main works by
the given individual are indicated together with literature about his
life and activity, relevant reference publications and archives.
The foreword to this handbook provides fresh information about changes
in the administrative structure of the museum and in its staff during
the period 1852-1917. The publication has 76 portraits (sketches, engravings,
photographs) of employees of the Imperial Hermitage which come from the
Archive of the museum.
