Hellenistic Studies in the Hermitage. Marking
the 60th Birthday of M. B. Piotrovsky
A collection of articles
This collection of articles by researchers in the Department of the Ancient
World entitled Hellenistic Studies in the Hermitage (193 pages,
colored and black-and-white illustrations, with a resume in English) has
been issued by the State Hermitage Publishing House.
The stimulus to the appearance of this book came from the deliberations
involved in choosing exhibit items for the Hall of Hellenistic Art, which
was about to be re-opened following reorganization of the displays. This
work compelled all participants not only to make a profound study of art
works that were drawn out of the storage rooms, but also to try to give
new interpretations to some well known art monuments of Antiquity that
had been on permanent exhibition and were directly related to Greek art
in the age of Hellenism.
The 12 articles in the collection deal with variîus forms of art created
by the ancient masters - both large and small sculptures, jewelry, glyptics,
and ceramics. They also attempt to show, on the basis of concrete examples,
the link between Hellenistic art the storage rooms, d together wiànd works
by artists of the Roman period. Several articles are devoted to Hellenistic
material coming from archeological excavations in the Northern Black Sea
Littoral, Olvia, Nimfeya, and the Tamansk peninsula.
