Series: Encyclopedia of Russian Antiques.

Russian Bronzes is the first volume of the planned encyclopedia of Russian
antiques "Ākānt." This book has been prepared by State Hermitage
researcher Yu.O. Sychev and attempts to present in all their diversity
of forms and typology bronze objects which were created by Russian masters
from the 18th to early 20th centuries. Alongside Russian artisans there
were a huge number of foreign masters who were engaged in the production
of works in bronze. For them the enormous expanse of the Russian Empire
was something new and unusual: the freedom to create, the relations with
their client and even nature itself. What came to be called Russian bronzes
was the fruit of this peculiar combination.
This volume is particularly valuable due to its numerous illustrations
of the best examples of Russian decorative bronzes and light fixtures
from the collections of museums in Moscow and St Petersburg, many published
here for the first time. The book has a glossary of terms and guide to
the masters. This publication is intended for museum staff, antiques dealers,
collectors and all those who love beautiful things.
