Following the Tracks of Hunters
A booklet by Liya Livshits
St Petersburg, State Hermitage Publishing House, 2003
This small booklet helps a school-age child (or pre-school child accompanied
by an adult) take a theme-directed stroll through the Hermitage.
The journey begins in the Ministers' Corridor, the walls of which are
covered by tapestries. Here many of the wall hangings depict hunters and
the weapons they used (Hunt for Buffalos, Royal Hunt).
The tasks assigned to the child as he stands before each of these tapestries
help him or her to look attentively at the compositions.
The visit proceeds to the Knights' Hall, where huge drawings on reinforced
paper are exhibited. These also portray hunting scenes. Before the weavers
began their work, they received "cartoons" like these from the
artist, the same size as the future tapestry.
Having gotten to know cartoons, one can move along the display cases
nd see genuine hunting weapons. The booklet directs the attention of the
young traveler to the superb decoration which masters applied to swords,
arbalests, and arquebus.
In order to confirm the newly acquired knowledge, the child is offered
a crossword puzzle to solve. The booklet also has a special insert, the
game Your Tapestry, which lets the child prepare his or her own
design for a carpet in paper by cutting out and gluing down figures on
a background: "Surely you liked the carpet designs. Would you like
to make your own tapestry? Of course it is rather complicated to make
a real tapestry out of woolen threads. But it is entirely possible to
make one from paper, especially when an artist has already drawn in the
ornamental border around the central scene. You have as main characters
a fierce Hydra, two hunters, dogs, and even thistles. What remains for
you to do is the most important thing - to put this all together in such
a way that it is clear - the monster cannot get away!"
