The book entitled V.M. Glinka. Memoirs. Archives. Letters consists
of selected chapters from the memoirs of V.M. Glinka (1920s, 1930s, the
Siege of Leningrad), of a great many letters, critical essays and commentaries,
as well as the reminiscences of people who knew V.M. Glinka. The book
is richly illustrated and includes around 200 photos, many of which are
published for the first time.
Vladislav Mikhailovich Glinka (1903-1983) was a major scholar who worked
in many museums and became the principal curator of the Department of
History of Russian Culture in the State Hermitage, whose past he knew
wonderfully well.
In 2003, on the year marking the 100th anniversary of Glinka's birth,
the ARS Publishing House issued the book Curator ( Curator. Articles,
Letters. Prose. Commemorating the 100th Anniversary of the Birth of V.M.
Glinka, St Petersburg, 2003). The idea for the book was put forward
by G.V. Vilinbakhov and M.S. Glinka. This book was very highly esteemed
by specialists and historians as well as by the general reader. It was
in fact the first volume of the publication presented now. It is no coincidence
that Director of the State Hermitage Mikhail Piotrovsky began his foreword
to this volume with mention of Curator:
"I am very pleased that publication of the book 'Curator' essentially
laid the ground-work for new initiatives. That book was so good and its
title was so fortuitous that it naturally led not only to the follow-on
volume we offer readers today but gave rise to the idea of creating a
series telling about other curators in the Hermitage and generally about
the people whom we can call by this lovely name of curator."
“This is a special word. Its solemnity and grandness comes from the
essential feature and professional objective of museum managers, something
that is not always clear to outsiders. Often you hear that art may be
understandable, but what are you doing here? And the words 'curator' and
'caretaker' or 'custodian' are sometimes associated with the idea of a
warehouse, namely the head of a storage facility. Therefore it is appropriate
to put out a series under the general heading of 'Curator,' books which
will in a most entertaining manner tell us about museum people and their
amazing work. After all, museums are places where woks of art, buildings
and people are inseparable. By people, we mean both those who are alive
and those who were here and have departed, but who live on in the memory
of people working in these halls... Thanks to books in the series 'Curator,'
thanks to the stories of these people and about them, thanks to the archival
materials, we continue living in their midst. This book helps us to feel
their presence better and allows others to experience what we feel.”
