1908 Design and execution by Grigory Zimin Imperial Porcelain Factory and Glassworks Multi-layered crystal glass, hand-blown, decorated with painting between layers and etching In the early 20th century Russian landscape became a popular theme at the Imperial Porcelain Factory and Glassworks. The vases that Grigory Zimin (1875-1958) made and decorated with painting between layers are a rarity in museum collections. The glass carries an image of an unremarkable Russian landscape: the branches of the trees seem to dissolve in the diffuse light that passes through the matte surface of the objects. The state of the landscape changes depending on the character of the lighting and the time of day. These works could only have been produced in the era of the Art Nouveau with its principles of inconstancy and changeability that emerged at the turn of the new century. |
