Vase: Sailing Boats

1906

Designed by Rudolph Wilde. Worked by A. Andreyev

Imperial Porcelain Factory and Glassworks

Multi-layered crystal glass, hand-blown, carved and engraved

The design of the Sailing Boats vase was produced by Rudolph Wilde (1868-1942) in the year that he became head of the painting and cutting workshops of the Imperial factories. At that time Russian national subjects were increasingly being used in the decoration of glass and porcelain articles. The factories’ artists drew on folk art, Early Russian carving and miniature painting, as well as the work of contemporary masters of the Neo-Russian style. The subject for this vase (a line of traditional-style sailing boats) and the decorative approach evoke associations with the famous canvases of Nicholas Roerich (1874-1947). The vase was created using the complicated and laborious technique of carving and engraving on multi-layered coloured crystal glass.
