Bird Idol (Pendant)

Perm Region

6th-9th century AD

Bronze

Lomovatovka Culture

L 8.3 cm, w 4.8 cm

This plaque in the shape of a bird with outspread wings and a human face on the breast was cast in an open-sided mould with subsequent working of the surface. The cult of the bird around the River Kama incorporated some elements of totemism, sun worship and hunting magic, as we can see from the representation of the human face on the breast of the bird.
