Zoomorphic Terminal

Staraya Ladoga

9th-10th centuries

Horn

H 10 cm

This terminal is executed in the shape of a flattened, hollow crook topped with an animal's head with long bared teeth and highly expressive flared nostrils. One side of the figure is decorated with carving.

It is not clear what this object was designed for. Although it is similar to carved Scandinavian objects of the Viking era, the ornament reveals a local origin.
