Deer (terminal)

Eastern Altai, Pazyryk Burial Mound 2

5th century BC

Wood, leather

H 11.5 cm

This sculpted figure of a deer is set on a globe-shaped base. The head of the animal is crowned with large branched antlers cut out of leather. The antlers were originally gilded. Iron rods at the bottom of the base suggest that the figure would once have been attached to another structure, probably to some head-dress.
