A Mistress and Her Maid

Pieter Hendricksz.de Hooch

Oil on canvas; 53 x 42 cm

Depicting this typical Dutch scene, Pieter de Hooch reveals the poetry of the quiet everyday life of Dutch burghers. Hooch's characteristic device of showing a view of the street through the gate in the background enabled him to depict the unity of the individual's life with the surrounding world. The artist was clearly also interested in capturing the effect of diffused sunlight filtering into an interior, the luminosity and freshness of small, airy courtyards, where people are in harmony with their surroundings. This painting was executed during the artist's period of greatest creative maturity.
