| ![]() ![]() ![]() Robert Campin (Master of Flemalle) Oil on panel; 34.3cm x 24.5cm The right leaf of this diptych is devoted to the Christian tenet of incarnation, and is less traditional than the left. Mary is represented as an ordinary Netherlandish woman seated by the fireplace in the room of an ordinary Netherlandish burgher's home. The basin standing on a side-table and the towel hanging beside them are symbols of the Madonna's purity. Medieval tradition is reflected in the elongated figures, although the method of representing three-dimensional space and light-and-shade effects reveal that the artist is a master of the Northern Renaissance. The details of the setting - the firewood and flame in the fireplace, and the patterned blanket - are depicted with great attention to detail, illustrating the attachment of the Dutch people to objects of everyday life and their ability to find poetry in ordinary objects. |
