The Holy Trinity

Robert Campin (Master of Flemalle)

Oil on panel; 34.3cm x 24.5cm

The diptych is devoted to one of the two principal tenets of Christianity: redemption. The Trinity is represented in accordance with traditional iconography. Christ is depicted lying dead in God the Father's arms with a dove representing the Holy Ghost hovering above. The sculptured figurines on the throne are religious symbols of Christianity: the pelican feeding its young with its own blood is a symbol of the sacrament of Communion; the lioness alludes to the legend in which her stillborn cubs are awakened to life three days later by the lion's roar (a reference to Christ resurrected by God the Father). The composition of The Trinity, the modelling of the figures, and the representation of the pedestal reveal the influence of Gothic sculpture.
