The Dairymaid's Family

Louis Le Nain

Oil on canvas; 51 x 59 cm

Modest paintings truthfully depicting scenes from peasant life belonged to a new realistic genre in17th-century French painting. Le Nain's peasants are calm and confident, full of dignity. The silvery grey and brown tonality, the static poses of the figures, and realistic depiction of texture are perfectly in keeping with the mood of the group, and Le Nain is justly considered a master of light and colour.
