Portrait of Count N.D.Guriev

Jean-August-Dominique Ingres

Oil on canvas; 107 x 86 cm

Ingres' portrait of the diplomat and participant of the 1812 War, Count N.D.Guriev, is one of the most brilliant portraits to be produced in the 19th century. In his portrait of this Russian dignitary, the artist was able to convey both Guriev's own self-respect and an awareness of the sitter's importance. Precise lines and thorough modelling create a classical and chiselled image.
