Portrait of Benet Soler

Pablo Picasso, 1881-1973

1903

Oil on canvas; 100 x 70 cm

Picasso painted the portrait of his friend Benet Soler, a fashionable tailor, in Barcelona in the autumn of 1903. Paying great attention to his appearance even during times of desperate poverty, Picasso would order his clothes from Soler and pay for them with his pictures. The portrait, executed in dark blue tones, expresses the melancholy which Picasso was prey to during his Blue Period.
