The Virgin and Child under an Apple Tree

Lucas Cranach the Elder, 1472-1553

1520-1526

Oil on canvas (transferred from panel); 87 x 59 cm

Despite the fact that the picture contains numerous symbols of Christianity – an apple tree, which represents Eve, whose sin shall be redeemed by the Virgin Mary; the crust of bread in the infant's hand symbolizing Christ's body – the picture recalls a secular painting. Mary is depicted as a woman of fashion with the eyes typical to most of Cranach's models, narrow and elongated. The combination of red and golden-yellow with emerald and cool blue intensifies the humanism affirmation of the joy of existence.
