Goblet with Crown and Initial 'C'

Giuseppe Barovier (?)

c.1878

Italy, Venice, Salviati workshop

Clear and coloured opaque glass

h 33.8 cm

The goblet dates to the time of the revival of Venetian glassmaking in the mid-19th century, a revival associated with the name of Antonio Salviati, who founded a mosaic workshop and firms making blown glass on Murano. Initially, the wares produced there imitated the forms of the Renaissance and Baroque; later the Murano glassmakers found new ways of interpreting earlier forms, changing shape and colour in conformity with the taste of their time.
