Dancing Figure from the Table
Centrepiece 'Dance with Scarves'
Agathon Leonard
1900
France, Sevres
Biscuit; h 47.5 cm
Inspired by the famous dancer Lois
Fuller, the sculptor Agathon Leonard
made the model for a table centrepiece
in the Art Nouveau style. It consists of
14 female figures dancing and playing
music, and three bases of different
heights. The centrepiece was hugely
successful and subsequently produced
in different sizes. A full set, now in the
Hermitage, was presented to Nicholas II
by the French government in October
1901 to commemorate his visit to
France.
