The central figure of this composition is the centurion who, according to the Bible, was the first to recognise the importance of the events on Golgotha, and repented. The spatial resolution of the scene is striking, since the action unfolds not along the lower edge of the relief but inwards, which was typical of the traditions of the Danube School of sculpture. Only two other reliefs bearing the monogram I.P. are known. |
