Henriette III, (Large Head) 1929
Henri Matisse, 1869-1954
Bronze; h 40 cm
During the 1960s, Henriette Darricarrere modelled constantly for
Matisse. Her likeness can be easily found in many of his paintings and sculptures of that
period. Matisse executed three versions of this portrait of Henriette. This third version
was created from memory and with reference to the second version, which he here reworked:
he accentuated the lines around the nose, lips and eyes, thus rendering the form more
energetic and expressive. The sculptor succeeded in conveying a sense of the density and
weight of the material.
