The Annunciation

Federico Barocci, C. 1535-1612

C. 1581

Drypoint with stipple engraving 44.5 x 31.2 cm

The Annunciation reproduces a painting which the artist had made for the Church of Madonna di Loreto in Rome. Technically, this is a skilful etching, which effectively conveys the spirituality that radiates from the figure of the young Virgin Mary and the Angel of the Annunciation. The artist is known for his paintings and frescoes on religious themes, as well as for his portraits. In 1581 he made four etchings, at least three of which were derived from his paintings, executed in drypoint and stipple techniques.
