Pachekabuddha

Thailand, Lana (Extreme North)

1592-1593

Bronze, gilt H 54 cm

This statue represents an individual who attained the enlightenment through his personal efforts, and who has heard neither about the Buddha nor about his teaching. The Buddha is sitting on a tall lotus in the Vajrasana pose. His arms position denotes contemplation. On the pedestal is an inscription containing the names of those who created the sculpture and the purpose of its creation. This figure is regarded as an important item in the Hermitage collection, for this personage is very seldom represented in Siamese art.
