Rhyton

2nd-1st centuries BC

Parthia

Ivory

This vessel is in the shape of a large horn, terminating in the half-figure of a fabulous winged creature with lion's paws. The upper part of the rhyton is decorated with a carved frieze bearing representations of gods and heroes. It combines a form typical of Asia with Greek motifs, the latter adapted somewhat in accordance with local artistic traditions.

Dozens of such rhytons were found by archaeologists during excavation of the town of Ashkhabad.
