Christ Pantocrator
1363
Wood, egg tempera, gesso
This icon was created for the Monastery of the
Pantocrator on Mount Athos. It is a
characteristic work from the last high period of
Constantinople painting, the late 14th and
early 15th centuries. Whilst this emotionally
charged image of Christ is very linear, the
colouring - combining ultramarine blue in the
garment and golden ochre in the ground - is
very striking. In the lower corners are
representations of the donors with Greek
inscriptions.
