Silver Ewer

6th-early 7th centuries

Silver, gilding H 33 cm

This ewer with a loop-shaped handle has a typical Sassanian shape and classically balanced proportions. The ewer's body is decorated with two medallions surrounded by wreaths containing Zoroastrian mythological creatures known as senmurvs, winged animals with a peacock's tail and palmettes on their necks. The front of the body is decorated with an exotic flower, a symbol of the Tree of Life.
