Dish

1473-1474

Fritware H 9.2 cm, diam 35 cm

Such vessels with blue underglaze decoration predominated in Persian pottery of the Timurid and Safavid eras. The technique became widespread due to the influence of Chinese porcelain. The dish bears an inscription in a narrow strip bordering the central medallion, indicating the date and place of its production and with lines of verse, which end in prose:

"The yard of the eye's house I washed [with a tear], but what is the use, If it is not the place suitable for all my dreams about you!"

This dish was finished in Mashad in the year 878.
