Head of a Monk

Fragment of a wall painting

684-780

Loess 83 x 35 cm

This fragment comes from the Monastery ‘The Caves of a Thousand Buddhas' (existed 366-early 13th century) at Dunhuang, Western China. It bears a fragmentary representation of a monk with a green nimbus; in this case we see before us a pupil of Buddha, the face of a true believer with intense gaze and vividly trembling lips.
