Lacquer Box

Wood, carved lacquer

This round box with a lid is coated with a design in many layers of red, green and ochre. On the lid is a large "Chun" (spring) character with a small figure of the God of Longevity in a circle. Under the character is a carved image of a large big bowl containing jewels. The sides are decorated with cartouches with landscapes and figures, and eight treasures: coral, rhinoceros horns, coins etc.

The decoration symbolizes longevity, happiness, wealth and all benefits.
