Plate (Tarel) and Chalice

1679

Gold, enamel, niello, precious stones

Plate: diam 20.8 cm

Chalice: h 29.2 cm, diam 16.7 cm

Workshops of the Moscow Kremlin

This chalice and tarel formed part of the set of vessels necessary for the liturgy. According to the inscription, the whole set was commissioned by Tsar Fyodor Alexeyevich for the palace churches in the Moscow Kremlin. The plant motifs, relief depictions of fruit with ribbons, the medallions showing Christ, the Mother of God and saints, are striking for their freshness and the lustre of the enamel colours. The decoration of the tarel is more restrained than that of the chalice.
