Snuffbox with a Monument to Catherine II

St Petersburg, Russia

Johann Gottlieb Scharf ????

1776

Gold, enamel, uncut diamonds, sapphires, silver; cast, chased, painted

H 1.9 cm, l 6.9 cm

The enamel medallion on the lid, which shows a monument to Catherine II by Fedot Shubin, was commissioned by Prince Grigory Potemkin. It was executed as a miniature by the artist Gavriil Kozlov in late 1790 or early 1791. Because the monument was erected only in 1790, and the snuffbox dates to 1776, the medallion was clearly attached later.
