Service with nielloed views of Moscow

Moscow

Ovchinnikov Manufactory

1893

Silver, ivory, mother-of-pearl; gilt, niello

The pieces of this service bear views of the Moscow Kremlin: the Sukharevskaya Tower and Krasniye (Red) Gates, the Peter Palace and Triumphal Gates, and the cathedrals of Christ the Saviour and St. Basil. Throughout the 1880s such services, decorated with nielloed views of Moscow in the Russian style, were very popular. The ornamentation of such objects was similar to that of the nielloed gold and silver ladles and cups produced at the Kremlin Armoury in the 16th to early 17th centuries.
