The Hermitage in the World of Publications 2003

The Hermitage Days are traditionally accompanied by an exhibition displayed
in the theater foyer, which offers a report on the museum's research and
exhibition activities during the previous festive year. Academic books,
abstracts of presentations made at conferences and readings in the Hermitage,
and catalogues of exhibitions displayed in the Hermitage and other Russian
and foreign museums are showed.
The fundamental catalogue of the year's central exhibition Founder
of St. Petersburg devoted to Peter the Great has been written by a
team of scholars and published by Slaviya. The book contains 440 pages
and 600 full-color illustrations. Many of the exhibits it publishes have
never been displayed before.
To celebrate the 300th anniversary of St. Petersburg, SLOVO issued
the Great Museums of the World album The Hermitage, authored by Mikhail
B. Piotrovsky, describing the museum's collection of painting.
The illustrated academic catalogue Aleksandr Danilovich Menshikov:
The First Governor and Builder of St. Petersburg has been issued
by the Hermitage in cooperation with ARS Publishers to accompany the exhibition
devoted to Peter I's favorite in the Menshikov Palace.
The three exhibitions presented in the Hermitage, Kazan and London, which
showed photographs of St. Petersburg made in the late 19th - early 20th
centuries, gave rise to the catalogues St. Petersburg in Photography:
1840s-1920s, St. Petersburg in Photographs of the 1840s-1920s: City and
its People (both published by Slaviya, St. Petersburg), and St.
Petersburg:
A 300th Birthday Tribute. People and Palaces in Photographs around 1900
(London).
One part of the Russian-French culture program celebrating the tercentenary
of St. Petersburg, the exhibition Paris -
St. Petersburg, 1800-1830: When Russia Spoke French
(20 May - 30 August, 2003, Paris), was accompanied by a catalogue of the
same title and a special 3rd issue of the magazine World Art Museum
published by the company Interros, which sponsored the project.
Exhibitions which were brought to the Hermitage from various countries
and museums of the world to celebrate the city's jubilee are presented
by the catalogues Harmony of Style in Architecture: Drawings and Designs
of Giacomo Quarenghi from Italian Municipal Collections, Cobra Group and
its Contemporaries from Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam, Cy Twombly in the
Hermitage, Swedish Glass, M.K. Escher in the Hermitage, The World of Kawati-momen:
The Japanese Blue, and others. The catalogue Nicholas de Stael
accompanied the exhibition of the great French master. The Russian Style
books The Hermitage: Great Collections of the Great Museum by M.B.
Piotrovsky and O.Ya. Neverov and Russian Imperial Porcelain by
T.V. Kudryavtseva were published by Slaviya in Russian and English.
St. Petersburg Album: Photographs from the Hermitage Collection
published in Moscow by Iskusstvo was much appreciated by art lovers. To
celebrate the city's tercentenary, the museum prepared the booklet Gifts
from the Hermitage for the 300th Anniversary of St. Petersburg and
the Catalogue of the Hermitage Exhibitions in 1996-2002 (Slaviya).
The catalogue and booklet Staraya Ladoga: The Ancient Capital of Russia
celebrated the 300th anniversary of St. Petersburg and the 1250th anniversary
of Staraya Ladoga.
As usually, the Hermitage's many temporary exhibitions were accompanied
by catalogues The Stroganoffs: Art Patrons and Collectors, which
continued the series of publications about the major Russian collectors
and collections; The Art of Portrait: West European Paintings of the
18th - 19th Centuries from the Hermitage Collection issued for the
exhibition which opened in Novosibirsk the long-term program The Hermitage
in Siberia (Slaviya); The Ob Treasures: Western Siberia on the
Medieval Trade Routes published for Salekhard (Salekhard), and others.
The books Nymphea. Confin de Oikoumene Fondos Arqueologicos del Ermitage
(Valencia, Spain), Sevres Porcelain from the State Hermitage Museum
(Tokyo, Japan), and II secolo d'oro della maiolica. Ceramica Italiana
dei secoli XV-XVI dalla raccolta del Museo Statale dell'Ermitage (Milan,
Italy) accompanied exhibitions abroad.
The exhibition shows the latest publications - the catalogue Leonardo
La Madonna Litta dell'Ermitage di San Pietroburgo and Rembrandt
et son ecole. Collections du musee de I'Ermitage de Saint-Petersbourg.
Academic publications include Chronology of European Scythia in the
7th-4th Centuries BC authored by Dr. A.Yu. Alekseyev, Director Department
of Archeology of Eastern Europe and Siberia, issued by State Hermitage
Publishing House. Cross of St Trudpert in Monsertal, Schwarzwald, from
the Hermitage Collection (Munich, Germany) resulted from joint efforts
of the Hermitage scholars and their German colleagues. Dr. S.O. Androsov,
Deputy Director Department of West European Art, focused in his books
Russian Customers and Italian Artists (Dmitry Bulanin Publishers)
and Ancient Myths in Stone and Bronze on painting and sculpture.
Publication of materials yielded by the Southern Crimean (2nd issue)
and Kerch expeditions continued the series describing results of the Hermitage
archeological expeditions. Archeology Collection No. 36 included
materials of Eurasian archeology and their analysis (State Hermitage Publishing
House).
The collection of article Russian Art in the Hermitage (State
Hermitage Publishing House) was issued to celebrate the 60th anniversary
of the Department of History of Russian Culture.
Traditional publications issued during 2003 including abstracts of presentations
made at the Hermitage readings in honor of B.B. Piotrovsky, V.F. Levinson-Lessing
(State Hermitage Publishing House) and others.
In 2003 Arcada Publishers jointly with the School Center issued a number
of publications intended for children - the game guide book Hunting
in China by N.Ye. Krollau, the booklet Following in Hunters' Steps
by L.Ya. Livshits inviting readers for a tour of the Hermitage rooms,
and the game Your Tapestry. The quiz book A Tour of the Hermitage
by L.Ya. Livshits and R.M. Kogan and the booklet on art of Ancient Greece
by L.I. Davydova and S.S. Moldovanova are addressed to junior and senior
high school children.
The exhibition for the first time shows CD ROMs of the series Masterpieces
of World Art in the Hermitage Collection - Angels of the Hermitage, Cameos,
Rembrandt, Best of the Best (I-III), and the music disks 18th Century
Organ from the Hermitage Collection: Yury Semenov Plays and The State
Hermitage Orchestra: Mariinsky Academy of Young Singers.
