![]() Matisse, His Art and His Textiles: The Fabric
of Dreams This exhibition is the first to put on display the superb collection of fabrics which Matisse collected all his life and which played such an important role in his works. The artist employed a symphony of beautiful upholstery materials and other fabrics, present in great abundance and richness, to add to the harmony of light in his canvasses and to amplify their expressiveness and emotional content. Among the fabrics which were especially important to Matisse we find printed linen material from the city of Jouy-en-Josas, blouses made in the Romanian fashion and material woven according to the Indian ikat technique. The exhibition presents paintings and drawings which show how Matisse’s views changed with respect to the fabrics, colors, textures and decorative motifs in his works over the course of his life. The exhibition features 65 works by Matisse, among them paintings and collages in gouache, drawings, engravings and also works on material. The works on display come from the collections of museums from around the world, as well as from private collections. The State Hermitage has loaned to the exhibition Matisse’s oil painting Vase, Bottle and Fruit (circa 1906), Dishes and Fruit on a Red and Black Carpet (Le Tapis Rouge) (1906), Still Life with Blue Tablecloth (1909) and Seville Still Life (1910-1911) . |
