Cup on a high pedestal

13th -14th centuries.

Syria or the Golden Horde

Kashin, under-glaze painting in cobalt, over-glaze polychrome painting

Azov Historical, Archeological and Paleontological Museum-Park

One of the treasures of this exhibition is this cup in the form of a hemisphere on a high pedestal, with rich painting in cobalt, blue-green, red and black enamels and application of gold.to the surface.

On the bottom of the inside of the cup is a medallion with a composition on the theme of Eden. On the edge of dark blue backgrounds there are bright red peonies depicted on long, curved stems; over water pools and flowers there are Chinese phoenixes whose figures are drawn with precise movement in bold strokes. A double line of the medallion separates the central composition from vegetable ornament of the border.

From the outside, the vessel is painted with large rounded medallions having multi-petal blue flowers and a delicate red core on a white background. On the edge of the collar there is gold applied (contours of stylized letters filled in with red enamel).
