Atelier for producing baskets

1915-1917

"In their concern to find a worthwhile way of using the leisure time of the wounded from lower military ranks...the medical staff of the hospital came upon the idea of organizing various types of activities for them appropriate to their upbringing and knowledge and which, besides filling the idle hours of the wounded, would give them the possibility of studying some handicrafts that might be useful in their home life..." (Russian State Historical Archive, 1911-1915).

These ateliers were organized in three small rooms in the Fourth Spare Apartment of the Winter Palace (second floor, on the Neva Embankment). Permission to use these premises was granted on 16 November 1915.
