Love and Eros in the Culture of Antiquity The State Historical Museum is putting on an exhibition which tells us about one of the aspects of life in the Ancient World, about the beautiful feeling of love, about Love and Eros in the mythology and culture of Ancient Greece and Rome. The exhibition shows love among the gods, the cult of fertility and the Dionysian festivities. Alongside this it shows sexual relations of the Ancients, including same-sex love and prostitution in Antiquity. The majority of items on display in the exhibition are being shown publicly for the first time. Among them are unique black-figure and red-figure vases, clay lamps, a half-meter long marble phallus, terracotta statuettes and gems. There is a unique black-figure kylix which was used during feasts and depicts erotic scenes on its principal surface, while the stem has been made in the form of genitalia. Aside from the materials from Antiquity proper, the exhibition displays a number of Italian sculptures from the 19th century and several modern gemstones using images and subjects from Antiquity. The exhibit items come from the collections of the State Historical Museum, the State Hermitage, the A.S. Pushkin State Museum of Fine Arts and the State Museums of Berlin. |
