The State Hermitage Museum in Photographs (December
2006 - November 2007) During the Hermitage Days in the foyer of the Hermitage Theatre the first photographic expedition detailing the events which have occurred in the museum over the past year (from December 2006 to December 2007) will be displayed. This exhibition is not a publicity campaign or an official account of our work. The artists photographing the State Hermitage Museum attempted to talk about the life of the museum, its workers, friends and partners, day after day for the period of an entire year, from December to December, using photographic art. The December Boundaries were not chosen randomly. Each year at the beginning of December we hold the Hermitage Days. They summarise the events of the departing year and the intended plans for the following year. The authors of the exhibition show us that the State Hermitage Museum is not simply the largest museum in Russia. The State Hermitage Museum means educational and cultural programmes, concerts, plays and exhibitions, which are more and more frequently becoming part of the public life of the Northern Capital. The opening of the Hermitage Halls in Russian cities and abroad is an audacious project, which is carrying to the world knowledge of the historical and cultural importance of Russia and her place in the development of world civilisation. It is a broad circle of friends, including famous politicians, entrepreneurs, artists, scientists and writers. It is, finally, numerous, lively and active staff, providing for the operation of the museum and carrying out fruitful scientific, restorative and exhibition functions. The prime focus of the photographic artists are the events and the people - the events of varied character and sizes, from the massive and public celebrations to the small and cultured. And the people themselves are extremely different - from monarchs and royal families to the simple and unknown citizen, museum visitors, youths, school children. Of course, not all events are worthy of attention and not all participants came under the camera’s lense for this exhibition: the life of the State Hermitage Museum does not fit within an exhibtion’s frame. The exhibition has been prepared by employees of the Editing-Publishing Department of the State Hermitage Museum, managed by E.V. Zvyagintsev. |
