Chuck Close: Seven Portraits
29 February – 13 April 2008
Rooms by Saltykov Entrance

This exhibition presents recent works by the eminent 20th century American artist Chuck Close (b. 1940). Among them are a self-portrait, a portrait of former US president Bill Clinton (Bill), and portraits of the artist’s family members. Chuck Close often works with portraiture while experimenting with visual effects and hyper-realistic illusions. His giant canvases rework the traditional, space-constrained notion of the portrait as having a memorial and intimate nature. The exhibited works are painted in oil on canvas using sophisticated techniques developed by the artist. Chuck Close: Seven Portraits is the second contemporary art exhibition within the Hermitage 20/21 project.
